Granny Ripple Baby Afghan

***EDIT***

6/22/2014
I just began going through this pattern again for another blanket and found a mistake in the very first row, which I have now changed.  Hopefully that should help clear up trouble.  Sorry for the mistake, and I'll be sure to post edits as I find more problems!

For some reason, I never end up with enough chains in the beginning chain, or I end up with too many.  I'm trying to work out that kink in order for the pattern to work more effectively.
I have also added notes to the pattern to help clarify some confusing parts that I have noticed.  They are in italics.

I made this afghan last week for my aunt who has a baby on the way.  I found the pattern at The Lazy Hobbyhopper, but I had a little trouble following it while I started the blanket because I wasn't sure how much to chain (she's not super clear about it) and I couldn't scroll on my computer very well while I was holding the yarn and hook.

So I decided to write out a quick pattern sans follow-along pictures so I can reference it in the future for more afghans and for my friends who have been asking me to show them how to make it.  And I thought I'd share it with you for your ease.

Again, I take no credit for this pattern whatsoever.  I'm just writing it a bit differently for the ease of use.  All credit belongs to The Lazy Hobbyhopper - go show her some blog love for this amazing pattern!

*Note: If you have any questions or find any problems in the pattern, please leave a comment.  I review all comments and will make any changes or additional notes that are necessary.*

Granny Ripple Baby Afghan

Yarn: Bernat Baby Softee yarn in gray, yellow, and white
Hook: US H
Gauge: Doesn't really matter

Chain 132.
Row 1: 3 dc in 6th chain from hook, *[skip 2, 3 dc in next chain] twice, skip 5 ch, [3 dc, sk 2] three times, ch 3, 3 dc in same ch*, repeat from * to * until the end of the row.  (You should end on a peak with 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc being the end of the row.)
Row 2: Ch 5, [3 dc in next space (ch 3 space for the first one)] 3 times, *sk space (the "valley"), [3 dc in next space] 3 times, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, 3 dc in next 2 sp*, repeat from * to * until  end of row.  In ch 5 sp at the end, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc. (Basically, you're doing 3 dc in each normal space and skipping the valleys, and [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in each peak.)
Row 3 - 44: Repeat row 2.
Bind off.  Weave in ends.

. . .

For this blanket, I changed colors every 2 rows, which turned out nicely with these colors.  For a bigger afghan, you can use the same pattern but with a longer chain.  In the original pattern, her suggestion is to make the starting chain 1.5 times longer than you want the blanket.  Chain the starting chain in multiples of 18 and add 6 ch at the end.  Then repeat the pattern for as many rows as you like.

I hope you find this pattern understandable and that it's helpful for those of you, like me, who needed a more concise pattern without pictures to follow along.

Like I said, it's a beautiful pattern, and I can't wait to use it again!  Thank you to The Lazy Hobbyhopper for such a creative pattern!
